Plastic Odyssey

Background & challenges
Making Plastic Odyssey's ballast water drinkable and safe
We met Plastic Odyssey at the Change Now trade fair. Shortly afterwards, Plastic Odyssey called on InovaYa to install water treatment and safety units on its vessel, enabling the crew to avoid using plastic bottles for their drinking water on board. This first project has given rise to a beautiful partnership between our two teams, who are aligned to promote the importance of sustainable management of natural resources: Plastic Odyssey with its laboratory for low-tech recycling methods, and InovaYa with our on-board water treatment technologies and a member of our team present on the ship to raise awareness of water usage.
Thanks to the installation of 2 InovaYa treatment units, it is now possible to produce drinking water from ballast water, and to secure the ship's mains water supply during its stopovers. Since October 2022, the unYo and aYa units have produced over 28m3 of drinking water from ballast water, secured over 600 m3 of mains water, and saved over 28,000 1.5L plastic bottles.
Thanks to Thibault Roudier, our InovaYa ambassador on board Plastic Odyssey, we were able to meet water stakeholders from all over the world, initiate local partnerships during stopovers and discover local practices in terms of access to drinking water.
Project stages and our involvement
-
Unit installation | Apr. 2021 to Feb. 2022
InovaYa visited the shipyard 4 times to install its unYo and aYa units on the vessel. Custom-designed units to meet space and material constraints.
-
VIE recruitment |Jul. 2022
Recruitment of the VIE InovaYa on board the ship.
-
Commissioning | Aug. to Sept. 2022
Commissioning of treatment units.
-
Vessel departure | Oct. 2022
Departure of the Plastic Odyssey ship from Marseille.
-
Arrival of Thibault | August 2023
Meeting between Thibault Roudier, our new InovaYa ambassador on board Plastic Odyssey, and the InovaYa team to pass on instructions and increase his skills. Thibault's arrival at our premises in September 2023 and the start of his crossing.

Plastic Odyssey
Plastic Odyssey is an initiative designed to raise public awareness and combat plastic pollution in the seas and oceans. A ship travels the world's coasts documenting and deploying solutions to combat plastic pollution in two main areas: reducing plastic consumption and recycling plastic waste.
Plastic Odyssey is also a veritable laboratory for low-tech recycling methods, transforming plastic waste into everyday objects, building materials and energy. At each port of call, the onboard team shares its knowledge with the aim of encouraging and supporting the creation of local recycling businesses.
