Background & challenges

An experimental project to treat the water of the Maroni River in French Guiana.

Following a meeting with theOffice de l'Eau de Guyane, we realized that our unYo potabilization unit could meet the challenges of a specific site on their territory: a need for access to drinking water in an isolated area that is difficult to reach (4 hours by pirogue), with water containing organic matter.

Following the signing of a partnership agreement between InovaYa, the French Guiana Water Authority, the French Guiana Regional Health Agency, the French Guiana Water Company, the municipality of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and the municipality of Grand Santi, we set off on an exploratory mission to understand the local constraints and analyze the quality of the water to be treated.

In order to obtain the desired water quality, it was decided to develop a new version of the unYo, modulated with a nanofiltration technology brick.

In order to verify various qualitative, technical and economic aspects, and to determine whether the device could be deployed in other areas of the territory, the potabilization unit has been installed on the French Guiana Water Authority drinking water production site, where it is currently being tested for 1 year.

Throughout the experiment, the treated water will be analyzed and will not be distributed to users. Eventually, the system will be handed over to the municipality of Grand-Santi.

Our partners

L'French Guiana Water Authority (OEG) is the organization in charge of water management in French Guiana. It is responsible for monitoring and preserving water resources, surface and groundwater quality, and managing water-related infrastructures.

TheFrench Guiana Regional Health Agency (ARS) is a public body responsible for coordinating and regulating healthcare activities in the French Guiana region. Its role is to oversee the organization of the healthcare system, the quality of care, disease prevention and the promotion of public health.

Improving access to drinking water in French Guiana

"In French Guiana, an estimated 15% of the population has no access to drinking water. The interior of the country is particularly hard hit, due to the difficulties of access and the many gaps that need to be filled. These difficulties in accessing water make the affected populations more vulnerable to waterborne diseases (parasitic infections, diarrhea, etc.). This is why the French Guiana Regional Health Agency (ARS in French) is mobilized to help evaluate new water treatment solutions in the region. We are therefore delighted to be able to participate financially and technically in this project with InovaYa, the French Guiana Water Authority, the Guyanese Water Company, and the town halls of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and Grand Santi.

Improving access to drinking water in French Guiana

"French Guiana Water Authority supports the development of alternative solutions that are better adapted to the region, and assists local authorities in this process. This is the framework for this partnership with INOVAYA, the Saint-Laurent du Maroni and Grand-Santi town councils, French Guiana Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Guyana Water Company (SGDE). The aim of this experiment with the UNYO potabilization unit in French Guiana is to alleviate the difficulties of access to drinking water and to propose various water treatment solutions."
