Background & challenges

We met with Plastic Odyssey at the event ChangeNow. Shortly afterwards, Plastic Odyssey called on InovaYa to install water treatment and safety units on its vessel, enabling the crew to avoid using plastic bottles for their drinking water on board. This first project has given rise to a fine partnership between our two teams, who are aligned to promote the importance of sustainable management of natural resources: Plastic Odyssey with its laboratory for low-tech recycling methods, and InovaYa with our on-board water treatment technologies and a member of our team present on the ship to raise awareness of water usage.

In addition, 2 InovaYa treatment units have been installed, making it possible to produce drinking water from ballast water. This secures the ship's supply of mains water at each port of call. Since October 2022, the unYo units and a customized unit have produced over 44m3 of drinking water. In other words, 44,000 1L plastic bottles have been avoided. Using ballast water, these water safety units had a positive impact. As a result, more than 2,000 m3 of mains water were treated.

Thibault Roudier, former InovaYa ambassador on board Plastic Odyssey, met with water stakeholders from all over the world. Indeed, we initiated local partnerships during our stopovers. InovaYa discovered local practices in terms of access to drinking water.

Plastic Odyssey

Plastic Odyssey is an initiative designed to raise public awareness and combat plastic pollution in the seas and oceans. A ship travels the coasts of the world to document and deploy solutions against plastic pollution through two main axes: reducing plastic consumption and recycling plastic waste.

Plastic Odyssey is also a veritable laboratory for low-tech recycling methods, transforming plastic waste into everyday objects, construction materials and energy. At each spotover, the onboard team shares its knowledge with the aim of encouraging and supporting the creation of local recycling businesses.
